Law Enforcement

The Sheriff's Office is responsible for enforcing the laws in Franklin County. With the cooperation of the law enforcement agencies of the of Rocky Mount, Boones Mill, and the Campus Police of Ferrum College, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office's Law Enforcement Division ensures that the county is safe and secure. Below are descriptions of the responsibilities of the Road Patrol, Dive Team, Tactical Response Team and the K-9 Team.

 

Road Patrol


There are five patrol sergeants and approximately 20 patrol deputies. These deputies are assigned to four shifts, which patrol 728 square miles of Franklin County. The patrol division is responsible for maintaining law and order, service of legal process (criminal and civil), enforcing laws, investigating crimes and or suspicious activates and arresting  violators. They observe traffic violations and issue summonses. These deputies respond to traffic accidents to maintain traffic flow, assist injured persons, and assist with investigating the causes of the accidents.  They also respond to fire calls, rescue calls, citizen complaints, and assist persons in need. These are just a few of the duties of the patrol division. They are always willing to go the extra mile to help a citizen in need or answer a citizen's question.

 


Dive Team


The Sheriff's Office formed the Dive Team in 1988. The Dive Team consists of 5 members from the Sheriff's Office, Rocky Mount Town Police and Public Safety. The Dive Team is responsible for the recovery and/or rescue of drowning victims. The team also is used to look for evidence and lost or stolen property that may be located under water. Several members of the team are certified as "Under Water Investigators".
 


Tactical Response Team


The Franklin County Sheriff's Office Tactical Response team conducts tactical operations related to barricaded suspects, hostage incidents, sniper incidents, raids and other emergency situations. The Tactical Team provides support to the members of the Sheriff's Office and other agencies through a highly trained specialized team, equipped with special weapons and related equipment with expertise in the use of tactics for emergency situations. They also conduct high risk search warrants where the use of weapons will be present. Support personnel may consist of K-9 units, hostage negotiators and recovery scuba divers.

 
The deputies must attend a basic Tactical training and Advance Tactical training. The tactical team conducts training eight hours monthly. Whenever possible the tactical team coordinates and conducts training with other tact teams. The Tactical Team is available 24/7 to assist with other jurisdiction as called upon. Training is also conducted with K-9 units and other specialized teams.

Sgt. Kelvin Pruett and his partner, Ammo, Sgt. Riley Hodges and Alix, Deputy Brandt Gawor and Drac, Deputy Nick Shockley and C.J. make up the Franklin County Sheriff's Office K-9 team. Each deputy and partner is a member of the National and Virginia Police Work Dog Association.   Franklin County Sheriff's Office believes that the K-9 Team is the greatest asset in the fight against drugs and drug trafficking throughout Franklin County. All K-9s are trained for detecting narcotics. This team is enthusiastic, well trained, and ready for a call at a moments notice.
 
Deputy John Lavinder and Bloodhound Dolley make up the Franklin County Sheriff's Office Bloodhound search team.  Dolley is an AKC registered Bloodhound.  John has been handling man trailing Bloodhounds since 1992. He is a member and instructor for the National Police Bloodhound Association, the Virginia Bloodhound Search and Rescue Association, and International K- 9 Academy, and has attended and instructed at many seminars throughout the years for these associations. He is listed as a resource for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. At present, he has handled five Bloodhounds. The Bloodhound is used for locating missing persons, and suspects who have left a crime scene.
