Nestled quietly on Booker T. Washington Highway (route 122) near the intersection of Jubal Early Highway (Route 116), Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department was formed by concerned citizens of the area.  In January, 1972, a meeting was held headed by P. E. Thornton with over 150 concerned citizen of the area to discuss the need for a fire department in the area and with land donated by William F. Turner and his sister Miss Elsie Turner and with materials and labor donated ground was broken.

For 35 years, Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department continues to strive on the tradition with a strong tradition of being all volunteer with 40 active members.  We answer all types of fires, motor vehicle accidents, hazmat calls, brush fires, or any call to help our community or surrounding communities.

We serve 85 square miles with over 3500 households and continue to grow yearly with major developments, home construction, and increase traffic due to the ever growing Smith Mountain Lake.  We run approximately 150-200 calls a year with five pieces of apparatus.  We also give mutual aid to six other fire departments throughout Franklin County and other surrounding jurisdictions.
