TOPICS OF DISCUSSION: Please find below a summary of the topics that were discussed and relevant information regarding those topics. If you have any questions, please contact your Rescue Captain or Fire Chief for details.

  • The meeting was moderated by Fire Marshal, Bennie Russell. Mr. Russell opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and thanking them for their attendance.

  • Operations Chief Billy Ferguson advised that the office been contacted by Appalachian Electric Power Company in reference to the establishment of a gated fence protecting the power line area from Riverbend to Brooks Mill Road. Each department that this gated entrance will receive a key to the gate, however, at this time this is only in the preliminary planning stages. Billy will contact each affected department with keys and maps as they become available. For more information contact Billy.

  • Billy Ferguson advised that the Emergency Operations Center here at the administrative offices of Public Safety is going to be extensively remodeled and a dedicated communications console will be set up to be used in the event of an emergency. This project is scheduled to be started around the first of the year.

  • Billy Ferguson advised that the Standard Operating Guidelines are on the website. Every department should be familiar with the SOGs and should have a hard copy available at the department. If your department needs a copy, contact the office and we will provide one.

  • Bennie Russell reported that he was behind in doing background and driver checks due to fire inspections. He indicated that completing these checks would be a priority in the coming weeks. He also indicated that he had noticed a trend in people falsifying information on these applications. Some offenses that applicants have committed are not justifications for denying membership to a department, however; falsifying information on the application is justification for denial.

  • Bennie Russell also reported that we have been receiving an unusual number of requests for fire reports. These requests come through our office and we supply the requesting party with the appropriate information. If a request is made of your department for a fire report, re-direct the request to our office. Also, Bennie advised to make sure that all fire reports are filled out completely.

  • Company 11 advised that they would be having a drill on the Virginia Dare on December 18th.

Meeting adjourned.
