TOPICS OF DISCUSSION: Please find below a summary of the topics that were discussed and relevant information regarding those topics. If you have any questions, please contact your Rescue Captain or Fire Chief for details.

  • The meeting was moderated by Chief of Operations, Billy Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and thanking them for their attendance.
  • Dr. Charles Lane presented the following information:
o   Carilion is in the process of implementing a performance improvement committee and will be seeking a representative from each EMS agency to attend bi-monthly meetings to review performance standards. More information will be distributed on this as it becomes available.
o   All providers should begin the transition from using the combi-tube to the King airway. As the combi-tubes are used, King airways should be ordered to replace stock.
o   Dr. Lane expressed his gratitude and appreciation for all that participated in the mock disaster at Franklin County High School.
o   R. J. Reynolds Hospital in Patrick County is closing it emergency department. It is unclear how much impact this will have on Carilion Franklin Memorial but they could see an increase of patients seeking emergency treatment.
o   Dr. Lewis has expressed a desire to participate as a Medical Examiner in Franklin County. If your agency needs a Medical Examiner and it is not a crime scene, try contacting Dr. Lewis. If contact is not made with Dr. Lewis within 15 minutes, contact Dr. Lane.
o   State Troopers have begun issuing tickets to responders who are responding to calls in their personal vehicles and are violating traffic laws. Be careful that you adhere to traffic laws when responding on calls for assistance.

  • Billy Ferguson presented the following information:
o   The Emergency Operations Center here at the administrative offices of Public Safety is going to be extensively remodeled and a dedicated communications console will be set up to be used in the event of an emergency.
o   The Standard Operating Guidelines are on the website. Every department should be familiar with the SOGs and should have a hard copy available at the department. If your department needs a copy, contact the office and we will provide one.
o   The AFG deadline is April 4th. Also, rescue squad can apply for this grant.
o   Effective April 1st, dispatch is going to plain English talk. After that date they will no longer acknowledge any 10 code other than 10-4.
o   EMS revenue recovery checks will be ready for pick up on Monday, April 7. Only the rescue squad captain can pick up the check. The amounts of the checks vary from $3,370.00 to $33,866.00.
o   There are 9 new staff members; 6 full time and 3 part time. All new hires are trained at the Intermediate level and higher. A new truck has added in the Westlake area. At this time, the truck is staffed from 3:00 PM until 7:00 AM. Once renovations are completed on a station for this truck it will go to 24/7 service.
o   The Public Safety internet site is continually being updated and if any department has anything that they would like to add to the site, please contact Billy and he will make sure that the additions are made. Also, all agencies have an e-mail address with Franklin County. Important information is sent to these mailboxes and they should be checked frequently.
o   A new map and a CD with the new map have been placed in each department’s mailbox at the administrative offices. Stop by and pick them up at your convenience.

  • Daryl Hatcher presented the following information:
o   There will be a grant writing workshop in July for anyone interested in attending. If interested, contact Mike Pruitt.
o   A brief overview of the requested budget was given.

Questions and Comments:

An inventory list from each department was discussed about being compiled. More information will be distributed on this as it becomes available.

The ID card making equipment will be sent to the Westlake office in the near future to make it convenient for responders to have their identification cards made. An announcement will be made when this service is available at Westlake.

Burnt Chimney Fire Company advised that they have turn out gear to give away. If anyone is interested in more information on this, contact Chief Lee Powell.

Callaway Fire and Rescue indicated that they are still having problems with their pagers picking up in different locations.

Callaway Fire has a hose tester and would be glad for anyone to use it if needed. Contact Billy Ferguson or James Webb to make arrangements to borrow the hose tester.
