County Licenses

MARRIAGE

Marriage licenses are issued by the Clerk of the Circuit Court in the Franklin County Courthouse. Both parties must be 18 years of age and at least one of the parties must be a resident of the County or both parties must be from out of state. If between 16 and 18 years of age, an applicant must be accompanied by a parent and furnish a birth certificate. If divorced, a party, must have a certified copy of one's divorce decree. Both parties must be present. The fee is $30 for a marriage license which is valid for 60 days.

HUNTING AND FISHING
Hunting and fishing licenses can be obtained from the Clerk of the Circuit Court's office.

DOG LICENSES
Licenses are required for all dogs four months and older. Licenses must be renewed annually, may be obtained at the County Treasurer's office in the Franklin County Courthouse. The fee is $4 for male dogs and spayed females, and $10 for unspayed females. A valid rabies certificate must be presented at the time of application. Licenses may also be obtained by mail. Renewal dates begin on October 1.

VEHICLES
License decals may be purchased at the County Treasurer's office or by mail. Annual dates are March 1 through April 15. Personal property taxes must be currently paid before decals are issued. Decal costs are:
     Cars and trucks - $25
     Trailers - $20 to $25 (depending on weight)
     Motorcycles - $18

Residents of the Towns of Rocky Mount (540) 483-5243 and Boones Mill (540) 334-5404 are required to obtain Town decals for automobiles, trucks, trailers, and motorcycles. Decals are sold in the Rocky Mount Treasurer's office and the Boones Mill Town Hall March 15 through April 15 or may be purchased as needed during the year. Contact individual offices for business hours.

BUSINESS
County licenses are required for peddlers, dance halls, outdoor events and coin-operated machines, as well as music festivals. They are available from the County Administrator's Office (540) 483-3030. Amusement Operators licenses must be obtained from the Commissioner of Revenue's office (540) 483-3083.

The towns of Rocky Mount and Boones Mill levy an annual business license tax on all professional and business establishments conducting business within the town. New businesses must secure licenses before beginning operations. Information and office hours may be obtained by calling the Rocky Mount Town Treasurer's Office at (540) 483-5243, or Boones Mill Treasurer's Office at (540) 334-5404.
