TRANSPORTATION

Roads: U.S. 220 is a divided four-lane north/south highway which links Interstate 81, 25 miles to the north, with Interstates 85 and 40, 74 miles to the south. Primary State Route 40 bisects the county going east/west.

Rail: The Norfolk Southern Corporation operates a main line north and south through the county. The line links the Franklin County-Rocky Mount area with the nation's major population centers and the Port of Hampton Roads.

Bus: Intercity Bus Lines provides the area with out-of-town passenger service and freight shipping and receiving. Charter and rental buses are available.

Motor Freight Carriers: More than 30 major freight carriers are authorized to serve the Franklin County-Rocky Mount area.

Commercial Air Service: Roanoke Regional Airport in Roanoke, 28 miles to the north, provides the only jet service in western Virginia.

General Aviation: Smith Mountain Lake Airport at Moneta, 25 miles east of Rocky Mount has a 3,500-foot runway.
*Roanoke Regional Airport has a 6,800-foot runway.
*Blue Ridge Airport at Martinsville, 30 miles south of Rocky Mount has a 5,000-foot runway.

Radio: WNLB, WYTI and WZBB, all located in Rocky Mount and WBLU at Smith Mountain Lake, plus stations in Roanoke, Lynchburg and Martinsville can be received

Cable Television: JetBroadband Communication provides cable service in the county and in the town. 

Network Television: ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and FOX affiliates from Roanoke and Lynchburg are well received in the county.
